Habitat
Most are found in tropical and subtropical ocean waters, but some species live in fresh water.
Diet
Puffer fish crack open and eat clams, mussels, and shellfish with their hard beaks. They also eat algae.
Movement
The puffer fish, also known as blowfish, developed their famous puffing because they are slow swimmers and that makes them easy for predators to catch.
Description
They range in size from the 1-inch-long dwarf puffer to the freshwater giant puffer, which can grow to more than 2 feet long. They are scale-less fish and usually have rough to spiky skin. All have four teeth that are stuck together into a beak-like form. Instead of escaping, puffer fish use their elastic stomachs and to quickly swallow huge amounts of water (and even air) to turn themselves into a ball several times their normal size, which predators cannot eat. Some species also have spines on their skin to protect them even more.
Enemies
Even though some puffer fish are poisonous, some animals such as sharks are able to eat the puffer fish safely. It is important also to know that not all species of puffer fish are actually poisonous and these species are preyed upon by larger fish, sharks and also humans.
